Education

In order to become a radiographer, you must complete an accredited radiography program. Radiography programs are accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or by regional accrediting agencies. There are a number of accredited radiography programs throughout the state of Indiana. Programs are generally 24 months in length and are sponsored by either hospitals or colleges/universities. Upon program completion, graduates are awarded either a certificate or an academic degree. Tuition and fees vary widely from program to program and interested individuals should contact a program directly for this information.
Programs have limited enrollment and preference is usually given to individuals who have a strong educational background. Courses in math (algebra and geometry) and science (biology, chemistry, and physics) are especially helpful, and in some instances, are required for admission.
The curriculum of a radiography program is fairly standard from one accredited program to another. Suggested coursework includes:
  • Oral and written communication
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Patient care
  • Radiation physics
  • Radiation biology and protection
  • Medical ethics and legal issues
  • Medical terminology
  • Instrumentation
  • Application of radiologic sciences theory and techniques
  • Quality assessment
  • Computer applications
  • Competency-based clinical education

Advanced Education

Graduates of accredited radiography programs have numerous opportunities for continuing their education. Bachelor degrees are available in such areas as clinical specialities, health occupations education, and health services administration. Graduates are also eligible to pursue career opportunities in such areas as nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy, cardiovascular interventional technology, diagnostic medical sonography, magnetic resonance, and computed tomography with additional education.

Registration/Certification

Graduates of accredited radiography programs are eligible to take the national certification examination offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Individuals who pass this examination insure their professional status and earn the right to use the title "Registered Technologist in Radiography." This title is abbreviated R.T.(R). Many positions require that the individual be an ARRT "Registered Technologist."
Advanced level examinations are also administered by the ARRT in specialty areas such as mammography, cardiovascular-interventional technology, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and quality management. Individuals who pass an advanced level examination add the appropriate initials behind R.T. For example, a radiographer who passes the mammography examination would abbreviate their title as R.T.(R)(M).
In the state of Indiana, legislation prohibits the operation of x-ray equipment by unqualified personnel. Certification through the Indiana State Department of Health is required of individuals who are seeking employment as x-ray operators. An ARRT "Registered Technologist" automatically qualifies for state certification upon submission of an application and payment of the certification fee.
ARRT registration provides additional benefits when applying for membership in the professional organizations. Individuals must be an ARRT "Registered Technologist", or equivalent to quality for active member status in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and in the Indiana Society of Radiologic Technologists (ISRT).
