EducationIn order to become a sonographer, you may complete an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program or acquire further education on the job. On-the-job education is typically provided to individuals who have previous experience in another health profession, such as radiography. Programs accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS) are offered by hospitals, or colleges/universities and can vary in length from one to four years. One year programs are designed for individuals previously qualified in a clinically related health profession. Two and four year programs may accept high school graduates.
The curriculum of a diagnostic medical sonography program varies depending on the type of program. Some programs are designed to educate individuals in the performance of general ultrasound procedures of the body and organ systems. Other programs are specifically limited to studies of the heart (echocardiography), studies of the blood vessels (vascular) or studies of the eye (ophthalmologic sonography). Registration/CertificationNational certification examinations are offered to qualified candidates by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Successful completion of the examination earns the individual the right to use the title "Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer" which is abbreviated R.D.M.S., "Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer" which is abbreviated R.D.C.S. or "Registered Vascular Technologist" which is abbreviated R.V.T. Many jobs require that the individual be registered as a condition of employment.
