Medical Imaging Education in Indiana
Click a career field below to learn more about educational institutions in Indiana that offer degrees in that field.

  • Radiography

    • Education
In order to become a radiographer, you must complete an accredited radiography program. Radiography programs are accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or by regional accrediting agencies. There are a number of accredited radiography programs throughout the state of Indiana. Programs are generally 24 months in length and are sponsored by either hospitals or colleges/universities. Upon program completion, graduates are awarded either a certificate or an academic degree. Tuition and fees vary widely from program to program and interested individuals should contact a program directly for this information.

Programs have limited enrollment and preference is usually given to individuals who have a strong educational background. Courses in math (algebra and geometry) and science (biology, chemistry, and physics) are especially helpful, and in some instances, are required for admission.

The curriculum of a radiography program is fairly standard from one accredited program to another. Suggested coursework includes:

      Oral and written communication
      Anatomy and physiology
      Pathology
      Pharmacology
      Patient care
      Radiation physics
      Radiation biology and protection
      Medical ethics and legal issues
      Medical terminology
      Instrumentation
Application of radiologic sciences theory and techniques
      Quality assessment
      Computer applications
      Competency-based clinical education

      Advanced Education
Graduates of accredited radiography programs have numerous opportunities for continuing their education. Bachelor degrees are available in such areas as clinical specialities, health occupations education, and health services administration. Graduates are also eligible to pursue career opportunities in such areas as nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy, cardiovascular interventional technology, diagnostic medical sonography, magnetic resonance, and computed tomography with additional education.

      Registration/Certification
Graduates of accredited radiography programs are eligible to take the national certification examination offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Individuals who pass this examination insure their professional status and earn the right to use the title "Registered Technologist in Radiography." This title is abbreviated R.T.(R). Many positions require that the individual be an ARRT "Registered Technologist."

Advanced level examinations are also administered by the ARRT in specialty areas such as mammography, cardiovascular-interventional technology, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and quality management. Individuals who pass an advanced level examination add the appropriate initials behind R.T. For example, a radiographer who passes the mammography examination would abbreviate their title as R.T.(R)(M).

In the state of Indiana, legislation prohibits the operation of x-ray equipment by unqualified personnel. Certification through the Indiana State Department of Health is required of individuals who are seeking employment as x-ray operators. An ARRT "Registered Technologist" automatically qualifies for state certification upon submission of an application and payment of the certification fee.

ARRT registration provides additional benefits when applying for membership in the professional organizations. Individuals must be an ARRT "Registered Technologist", or equivalent to quality for active member status in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and in the Indiana Society of Radiologic Technologists (ISRT).

  • Nuclear Medicine Technology

    • Education
In order to become a nuclear medicine technologist you must complete an accredited nuclear medicine technology program. Nuclear Medicine programs are accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT) or regional accrediting agencies and are offered by hospitals or colleges/universities and can vary in length from a one year hospital program to a four year bachelor degree program. One year programs are usually designed for individuals who hold certification in radiography, medical technology, nursing or a B.S. degree in one of the basic sciences.

The curriculum of a nuclear medicine program is fairly standard from one accredited program to another. Suggested coursework includes:

      Methods of patient care
      Radiation safety and protection
Nuclear medicine physics and radiation physics
      Nuclear instrumentation
      Statistics
      Radionuclide chemistry and radiopharmacy
      Radiation biology
Diagnostic nuclear medicine imaging and non-imaging in-vivo and in-vitro procedures
      Radionuclide therapy
      Computer applications for nuclear medicine
Immunology as related to nuclear medicine
      Quality control and quality assurance

      Registration/Certification
National certification examinations in nuclear medicine technology are offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB). Successful completion of one of the certification examinations is a usual job prerequisite for employment as a nuclear medicine technologist. Graduates of accredited programs in nuclear medicine technology are eligible to sit for these examinations. Individuals who successfully complete the ARRT examination earn the right to the title "Registered Technologist in Nuclear Medicine" which is abbreviated R.T.(N). Individuals who successfully complete the NMTCB examination earn the title "Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist" which is abbreviated C.N.M.T. Registered/certified nuclear medicine technologists qualify for active status in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), the Society of Nuclear Medicine-Technologist Section (SNM-TS) and in the Indiana Society of Radiologic Technologists (ISRT).

      Job Opportunities
Nuclear medicine technologists can find employment in both large and small hospital settings, outpatient clinics and imaging centers and physician's offices. Job opportunities also exist in industry, research, sales, civil service, and public health. Advances in the use of computers in medicine and the introduction of new radiopharmaceuticals to study the various organ systems provide exciting job responsibilities for individuals in the field of nuclear medicine. Salaries for nuclear medicine technologists entering the profession average from $17.00 to $22.00 per hour or $35,360 to $45,760 annually.

In order to become a sonographer, you may complete an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program or acquire further education on the job. On-the-job education is typically provided to individuals who have previous experience in another health profession, such as radiography. Programs accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS) are offered by hospitals, or colleges/universities and can vary in length from one to four years. One year programs are designed for individuals previously qualified in a clinically related health profession. Two and four year programs may accept high school graduates.

The curriculum of a diagnostic medical sonography program varies depending on the type of program. Some programs are designed to educate individuals in the performance of general ultrasound procedures of the body and organ systems. Other programs are specifically limited to studies of the heart (echocardiography), studies of the blood vessels (vascular) or studies of the eye (ophthalmologic sonography).

      Registration/Certification
National certification examinations are offered to qualified candidates by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Successful completion of the examination earns the individual the right to use the title "Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer" which is abbreviated R.D.M.S., "Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer" which is abbreviated R.D.C.S. or "Registered Vascular Technologist" which is abbreviated R.V.T. Many jobs require that the individual be registered as a condition of employment.
